CON ED GAS LOCKOUT

Con Edison Just Locked Your Gas?

Con Edison Just Locked Your Gas?

Con Edison Gas Lockout | F. Digiacomo & Sons - Plumbing, Heating & AC - Tuckahoe, NY
I Bet They Didn't Tell You This...
  1. We have to file with your local municipality.
  2. We must repair or replace any piping that is leaking.
  3. We must repair or replace any piping from your main house valve to the meter, “This is called extended service”.
  4. We must repair or replace any piping servicing the meter
    “This is called Meter Piping”.
  5. We must cap off all gas appliances and possibly change your individual gas valves if graphite packed.
  6. We must place a test on all gas piping from your meter to every gas appliance outlet. If any piping failed it must be repaired or replaced, “This is called Distribution piping”.
  7. We must coordinate with your inspector and pass an INTEGRITY TEST to obtain a “BLUE CARD”. This is required to have any meter turned on.
  8. We may have to remove and replace existing dryer vent, flue pipe from your boiler/furnace/water heater, fire place if gas fired.
  9. We must meet with CON EDISON for a gas turn on and another gas test.
  10. Oh and while that is taking place in the field there are approximately 6 or more affidavits that must be completed before CON EDISON comes back.
Ok, so now were done, right? NO.

Now as plumbers we have no direct phone number to call Con Edison to work as a liaison from the plumber to CON EDISON. I have been asking for this for years. They give us a feature on the computer to “ASK A QUESTION” and after I do that they have 24 hours to answer.

Now I am not stating this is right or wrong or could be streamlined faster.  I’m not saying what they are doing is incorrect. CON EDISON primary concern is SAFETY, not necessarily convenience and most of them are very pleasant people but again it’s SAFETY FIRST.

Lastly, make sure the company you use is OPERATOR QUALIFIED TASK 86 & 87, just being a licensed plumber doesn’t cut it! This is regulated by the Department of Transportation and these tasks require us to be enrolled in a Drug and Alcohol testing company, fees and all the cost brought to us. Keep in mind this is a federal license, it must be current and all requirements must be performed. A test must be completed and upon passing we must provide all the requirements to maintain the license.

So, #1, do you think I have been through this a few hundred times?

And, # 2, these requirements are necessary for safety, and the rules must be followed.

I hope I have made the process as clear as I can. I hope you have found my explanation even funny! Actually, I did this for one reason, to inform you, the customer of the process. OK, go ahead and ask, I know it’s coming, “WHEN WILL I HAVE MY GAS TURNED ON”, we have an average turn around anywhere between 3 to 5 business days. This all depends on how severe and how many leaks, again, every job is not the same, the only way you will really know is to CALL US.

Thank you,

John Digiacomo
